Rwanda outbound travel spending hits $197.8 million as business trips drive demand in 2026, with residents spending heavily on journeys outside the country during the first six months of the year. Official data show that business travel emerged as a major source of expenditure, while air passengers generated more than three-quarters of Rwanda’s outbound travel payments.

The latest Travel Expenditure Survey from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda provides a detailed picture of how residents are travelling and spending internationally. Rwanda recorded outbound travel expenditure, classified statistically as travel imports or debits, of $98.1 million in the first quarter and $99.7 million in the second quarter of 2026.

Together, that takes first-half expenditure to $197.8 million.

Rwanda Records Nearly $200 Million in Outbound Travel Spending

Outbound expenditure remained remarkably stable between the first two quarters.

The difference between Q1 and Q2 was only $1.6 million, with expenditure increasing approximately 1.6% quarter on quarter.

Period Rwanda Outbound Travel Expenditure Q1 2026 $98.1 million Q2 2026 $99.7 million H1 2026 total $197.8 million Q1 to Q2 increase $1.6 million Approximate quarterly growth 1.6%

The figures measure spending by Rwandan residents while travelling abroad. They form part of Rwanda’s travel-service imports and provide an important indicator of outbound travel demand.

For airlines, travel management companies, accommodation suppliers and agencies, the data show that Rwanda is generating a sizeable international travel market beyond its better-known role as an inbound tourism destination.

Air Travel Captures More Than Three-Quarters of Spending

The strongest commercial signal comes from the transport split.

According to NISR, travellers using air transport represented 76.4% of Rwanda’s outbound travel expenditure transactions during the reporting period.

That leaves a clear difference between traveller volume and travel value. Land crossings remain important, particularly within neighbouring East African markets, but travellers using air services account for the majority of expenditure.

In Q2 alone, Rwandan residents travelling abroad by air spent approximately $76.2 million, compared with $23.5 million among residents travelling by land.

Rwanda's outbound travel spending has seen a significant surge, reaching over $197 million in 2026, driven primarily by an increase in business trips. According to official reports, this growth is expected to continue as the country's economy expands and international trade increases. Q2 2026 Outbound Spending by Transport Transport Mode Spending Air travel $76.2 million Land travel $23.5 million Total $99.7 million

Air passengers therefore accounted for roughly three out of every four dollars spent abroad during the quarter.

This distinction matters commercially. A large number of border crossings does not necessarily translate into the highest-value travel segment.

Business Travel Emerges as a Powerful Outbound Segment

Business travel is particularly important within Rwanda’s outbound market.

During Q2, NISR estimated that business travellers using air transport spent $32.8 million abroad. Business was also the leading purpose among residents travelling by land, accounting for $16.2 million during the quarter.

Together, those figures indicate around $49 million in Q2 business-related expenditure across air and land travel.

That creates opportunities for travel companies specialising in:

Corporate travel management Flexible and changeable airfares Business-class and premium travel Airport transfers Short-stay accommodation Travel insurance Visa and documentation assistance Last-minute itinerary changes

Business travellers can require substantially different services from leisure customers. Schedule flexibility, reliability and rapid booking changes can carry greater importance than obtaining the lowest possible fare.

East African Community Remains Central to Cross-Border Travel

The East African Community remains fundamental to Rwanda’s international mobility.

Rwanda’s geographical position makes regional movement an important component of outbound travel, with residents travelling across neighbouring markets for business, family, education, health and other purposes.

The rise in outbound travel has also led to an increase in passenger traffic at Kigali International Airport, with many travelers opting for flights to destinations in Africa, Europe, and Asia. To manage this growth, the airport authority has implemented new passenger logistics systems, including online check-in and baggage tracking. For details on flight schedules and airport facilities, visit the Rwanda Airports Company website.

NISR’s Q2 findings show that all $23.5 million in estimated expenditure by residents travelling abroad by land was attributed regionally to the EAC.

This demonstrates the importance of regional connectivity alongside international aviation.

For the travel industry, the EAC market can support products including:

Regional hotel bookings Cross-border transport Corporate travel Ground transfers Short-stay packages Family travel Educational travel services

The commercial model is different from long-haul aviation. Regional land travel may involve lower spending per journey, but substantial movement across borders creates opportunities based on frequency and volume.

Europe Leads Q2 Air Travel Expenditure by Destination Region

Long-haul travel presents another important pattern.

NISR reported that Europe recorded the highest expenditure among destination regions for Rwandan residents travelling by air in Q2 2026, reaching $26 million.

That makes Europe an important market for higher-value outbound air travel.

Long-haul travellers typically require a wider collection of services, including flights, visas, insurance, accommodation and local transportation. Business and education journeys can create additional demand because trips may involve complicated itineraries or extended stays.

Education Produces the Longest Overseas Stays

Education travel is particularly interesting when duration rather than simply expenditure is considered.

NISR found that education was associated with the longest average overseas stay among Rwandan residents travelling by air, at 222 days.

As business travel continues to drive demand for outbound travel, tourism experts predict that leisure travel will also see significant growth in the coming years. To capitalize on this trend, the Rwanda Tourism Chamber is promoting the country's tourism offerings, including safari tours and cultural experiences. North America produced the most striking result.

Rwandan education travellers heading there recorded an average stay of 278 days, according to the survey.

Travel Indicator Result Average education stay abroad by air 222 days Longest regional education stay North America North America education stay 278 days

The length of these trips changes the commercial requirements of the traveller.

Students may need one-way or flexible tickets, additional baggage, insurance, accommodation support and documentation assistance. Their needs may also continue after departure, producing repeat opportunities for agencies that maintain long-term customer relationships.

Rwanda’s Travel Market Is More Than Leisure Tourism

One of the most important lessons from the survey is that outbound travel should not automatically be viewed as synonymous with holidays.

Business, education and visits to friends and relatives can represent major components of international mobility.

This creates several distinct customer groups rather than one general outbound market.

Segment Important Travel Products Business Flexible fares, corporate accounts, rapid changes Education Long-stay tickets, baggage, insurance, visa support VFR Value fares, baggage and flexible dates Holiday Hotels, experiences and packaged itineraries Health Appointment-linked travel, accommodation and accompanying traveller services

For travel businesses, segmentation matters because each group books differently and has different priorities.

NISR Methodology Adds Weight to the Findings

The figures are not based simply on bookings made through travel agencies.

NISR’s Travel Expenditure Survey measures spending patterns and combines survey information with traveller movement statistics. The broader methodology uses quarterly traveller numbers from Rwanda’s Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration alongside information such as average expenditure and length of stay.

The survey covers expenditure categories including accommodation, foo
