7 Things You Must Know about Egypt Before Booking Your Tickets

Introduction to 7 Things You Must Know about Egypt Before Booking Your Tickets

Egypt, a land of ancient wonders and modern marvels, beckons travelers with its rich history, diverse landscapes, and vibrant culture. Whether you’re drawn to the iconic pyramids, the bustling markets of Cairo, or the serene beaches of Hurghada, Egypt offers a kaleidoscope of experiences. However, before you embark on your Egyptian adventure, here are seven essential things you must know to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.

1. Beware of Scams

One of the first lessons I learned during my two-month stay in Egypt was to be cautious of scams. Tourists are often targeted with seemingly friendly invitations to stores, where they may be encouraged to have their name carved on a wooden artifact under the guise of it being free. However, this can lead to exorbitant charges later. Politely decline unsolicited invites and, if necessary, use the Arabic phrase “La Shukran” (no thanks) to fend off persistent offers.

2. Learn Basic Arabic Phrases

While English is not universally spoken, especially in more local establishments, learning some basic Arabic phrases can significantly enhance your travel experience. Numbers from 0 to 10 and phrases like “Shukran” (thank you) and “Yalla” (let’s go) can go a long way in communication and navigating daily interactions with locals.

3. Rely on Google Maps

Egypt’s streets can be intricate and confusing, especially in bustling areas like Downtown Cairo. To avoid getting lost in the labyrinth of identical streets, make sure to rely on Google Maps or carry a physical map. This is particularly crucial in areas where English may not be widely understood.

4. Understand the Climate

Egypt’s diverse geography translates to varying climates. While much of the country is desert, coastal areas like Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh experience moderate temperatures. Conversely, Mount St. Catherine in Sinai can have sub-zero temperatures. Cities along the Nile, such as Luxor and Aswan, offer tropical climates. Pack accordingly to suit the diverse weather conditions.

5. Hijab is Not Mandatory

Although Islam is the dominant religion, Egyptian women are not mandated to wear the hijab. However, when visiting religious sites like the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, women may be required to wear a special wrap-around skirt and cover their heads. Understanding and respecting local customs is essential for a respectful and enjoyable visit.

6. Be Aware of Weekends

In Egypt, the workweek typically runs from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday marked as the start of the weekend. This allows people to attend Friday prayers, a significant religious observance. Plan your activities accordingly and be aware that some businesses may operate on a different schedule during the weekend.

7. Alcohol Regulations

While alcohol is permitted in Egypt, it’s essential to be mindful of the regulations. Carrying liquor bottles without proper packaging can lead to legal issues. Ensure that you adhere to local laws and customs regarding the consumption and transportation of alcohol.

Conclusion

Egypt offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. By keeping these seven key considerations in mind, you can make the most of your journey and create lasting memories in this enchanting land. Safe travels!
