Batavia New York – Tourist Attraction
Batavia, New York, is a city in western New York state. The city is the county seat of Genesee County. It is named after the Betuwe region of the Netherlands, in honor of early Dutch land developers. The city is the home of the Batavia Muckdogs baseball team of the New York-Penn League. It is situated along the New York State Thruway, a major highway that runs through the city. The town has a UN/LOCODE of USBIA.

The canals of the city facilitated efficient transportation, as well as provided an aesthetic beauty to the area. The most notable canal was the Tijgersgracht, which bisected the older eastern half of the city. However, other canals were much smaller and curled, and some were repurposed to surround existing buildings. These features made Batavia a unique, thriving city. While some scholars interpret Batavia as a utopian society, other historians believe that the city’s plan is derived in part from the Dutch plan of the 17th century.
The town of Batavia’s first detailed plan dates from 1550, when the city was still part of the Netherlands. The surviving 16th century drawing shows a square with a fort at the center. On the other side, the city is shown with a roadstead that enables ships to navigate the harbor, which was silted up in part. The simplified city map suggests that the draftsman was aware of the city’s distinctive qualities.

Dwyer Stadium
Dwyer Stadium, a 2600-capacity stadium located in Genesee County, Batavia, New York is home to the Dwyer family. Dwyer Stadium was opened in 1996, replacing the 1937 original stadium. The original playing field is still at Dwyer. Although the stadium’s grandstand and surrounding structures are new, the area and field have been home to professional baseball for over 70 years. The original stadium was constructed in 1939. It underwent three names before being replaced by the new one in 1995. The first season of play was not completed. A snow fence was needed for each game.
To provide seating, chairs were borrowed from local mortuaries. The work continued throughout the first season, but it did not stop fans from attending. A snow fence was put up for each game to act as an outfield wall, while chairs were borrowed from a local mortuary. Dwyer Stadium (Original 1973-1995) Before the 1973 season, the stadium was named Dwyer Stadium in honor of Edward D. Dwyer who was a long-serving team president and was instrumental in keeping the team in Batavia. It was an old-time ballpark’s famous wooden covered grandstand. See less
