Nepal’s tourism sector recorded a new recovery milestone in July 2026, welcoming 71,775 international arrivals despite global aviation disruptions and rising fuel costs. The latest figures show a 2.3% year-on-year growth compared to July 2025, driven by strong outbound demand from India and China.

Even as higher operating costs and rising airfares affect global travel confidence, Nepal has maintained positive visitor growth throughout most months of 2026, with only March and April experiencing temporary slowdowns.

This steady performance highlights the country’s enduring appeal as a key destination for nature-based travel and alpine trekking.

Steady Growth and Regional Outbound Flows in the Himalayas

According to reports published by the Nepal Tourism Board, the 71,775 foreign visitors registered in July 2026 represent a steady increase from the 70,193 arrivals recorded in July 2025.

To manage this incoming flow, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) continues to coordinate with international carriers to improve flight availability at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) and regional gateways.

Market Breakdown: Indian Arrivals and the Chinese Outbound Growth Driver

India remains Nepal's largest international tourism market, providing 23,490 tourists in July. Indian visitors accounted for 32.73% of overall arrivals, driving local demand for hospitality services and cross-border transport.

Concurrently, China has emerged as a major growth driver. Nepal welcomed 11,099 Chinese arrivals in July, representing a significant 61.09% increase compared with the 6,890 arrivals in July 2025.

This performance also exceeded pre-pandemic levels, rising 8.65% above the 10,215 Chinese arrivals registered in July 2019, positioning China as Nepal's second-largest source market during the month.

Long-Haul Outlays: Demand from the United States, Europe, and Oceania

The United States remained the third-largest source market, contributing 7,754 visitors. Other long-haul markets continued to support the hospitality sector:

• United Kingdom: Provided 3,773 arrivals.
• Australia: Contributed 2,428 visitors.
• Europe (Total): Contributed 9,279 visitors, representing 12.93% of overall arrivals.
• Americas (Total): Handled 8,824 arrivals.
• Oceania (Total): Provided 2,607 visitors.

These numbers reflect consistent international demand for trekking routes, cultural expeditions, and national park safaris.

South Asian Transit Networks and Other Non-SAARC Inbound Flows

South Asia remains a critical regional market, providing 29,755 visitors from SAARC countries, or 41.46% of total arrivals. However, this represented an 11.93% decrease compared with the 33,787 SAARC arrivals recorded in July 2025.

Outside India, regional contributions included Bangladesh (4,179), Bhutan (991), Sri Lanka (581), Pakistan (475), and the Maldives (39), subject to guidelines on the Department of Immigration of Nepal portal.

Conversely, other Asian markets outside South Asia delivered strong momentum, contributing 17,424 arrivals—a 33.05% increase over the 13,052 visitors recorded in July 2025. Leading contributors included South Korea (1,394), Malaysia (1,380), Japan (1,111), Vietnam (574), Singapore (437), Myanmar (437), and Thailand (428).
