A passport is a document which allows a person to move across the borders. It serves as an identity of the people traveling outside the territory of their country. If you are planning to travel outside your country for any reason be it for tourism, work or studies you will require a valid passport. And if you are wondering about how to get a passport online then all you need to do is to follow this article. In this article you will get the step by step guide on how to apply for a passport online.

What is a Passport?

A passport is an official traveling document which is provided by the government. In India it is issued by the Ministry of External affairs of the government of India. Indian passports are attested only to those who are a citizen of India by Birth or Naturalization.

Types of Indian passport and which one is suitable for you

In India there are four different types of Passport and each of them is issued to different groups of people for different functions. First step towards getting your passport is to check which passport is suitable for you:-

  • Blue or Ordinary Passport
  • Maroon or Official Passport
  • Orange Passport
  • White passport

Blue or Ordinary passports are issued to the ordinary people for a normal traveling purpose like Vacation, Study or Business Trips.

Maroon or Official Passport are for official travels and these Passports are issued to the Government officials and Diplomats.

Orange Passports are issued to those citizens who need an emigration clearance for traveling to certain countries.

White Passports are for those who are accused of some  and having some criminal cases pending against them. These people are not fully eligible for a valid passport and hence are allotted with the White passport.

 Steps for online Application of Passport in India:-

Here are the step by step guide on how to apply for passport online:-

Step 1- Go to the official website of the government to apply for the visa online. (Passport Seva Home | Indian Passport | Passport | Passport Seva Project (passportindia.gov.in) )

Step 2- Register your account on the website or if you are already registered then login to the website.

Step 3- Enter your credentials and fill the captcha for verification.

Step 4- After you login click on the Fresh passport/ Passport reissue button.

Step 5- After you open the Fresh Passport section fill the details given there and then click on Upload e from.

Step 6- After the form gets submitted click on to the Pay and schedule appointment button to book an appointment.

Step 6- Click on the Print you Application Button to get a printout of your application and keep it with yourself for future reference. The payment mode should be online. 

Step 7- After you take the printout you will have to go to the Passport Seva Kendra / Regional Passport Office as per the scheduled appointment and also carry your original documents.

Required Documents to apply for the Passport:

  • For identification you should have any of the identification documents such as Aadhar card, Pan Card or Voter id Card.
  • A document for your Age Proof like birth certificate, Aadhar card etc.
  • Proof of your Residential Address Like electricity bill, Aadhar card.
  • A passport size photo
  • A photocopy of a Bank Passbook.

Issuance of Passport after Verification:

After your application gets verified successfully by the officials you will become eligible for the passport and the passport will be issued to you in 7 to 14 working days.
