Reason Behind the decision
- The move to allow Indians entry into Malaysia without a visa is intended to support the tourism industry in the nation, as Indian and Chinese visitors account for a sizable share of visitors from around the world.
- Indian nationals are permitted to enter Malaysia for up to 30 days without a visa. This was emphasized by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in his remarks on Sunday, November 26, at the People’s Justice Party’s annual congress in Putrajaya.
- But he made it clear that there would be security checks before this exemption could be granted.
- The Prime Minister said, “Beginning December 1, we will extend an additional 30-day visa exemption to citizens of India and China for travel to Malaysia.”
- Malaysia’s economic growth is dependent on the influx of tourists and their spending.
According to government figures, Malaysia registered 9.16 million tourist visits between January and June of this year, with 498,540 of those visitors coming from China and 283,885 from India. For comparison, during the same period in 2019, before the pandemic, there were 1.5 million arrivals from China and 354,486 from India.
Indian passport holders can enter Malaysia without a visa
