Stanzin Norboo
This is about Shara – a quaint little village in the outskirts of Leh. The children and youth of this village have been desiring to have a library and an activity centre where they can come and explore their talents and make use of their time constructively. The youth also wish to have an ice-skating rink in their village so that they can practice and help represent their village and district in any competitions.
Project details:
- Activity centre cum library.
- Multipurpose playground
Activity Centre cum library:
During holidays, weekends and winter vacations, children get bored as they are idle most of the time. There is nothing much that they can do.
The library will have a wide variety of books; academic books for students, magazines, religious and self-help books. Children will be engaged in reading and learning. Also, at the activity centre, they will invest their time in creating and learning lots of art, craft, music, and much more. These activities and much more will help children explore their talents and be engaged in useful ways.
The activity center cum library will comprise 3 rooms, a common hall, kitchen, washrooms, and a storeroom. One of the rooms will be used as a library.
For the construction of this centre, the plot of land is available. It’s the village land which has been agreed by the village head and the families to be used for the said purpose. Besides the plot of land, stones, and soil is readily available. Youth and children have expressed their desire to volunteer in the construction and building of this centre. I’m sure this will give them a sense of responsibility and ownership.
Multipurpose playground:
The vision is to make a proper multipurpose playground on which various sports like football, volleyball, badminton, hockey etc. can be played. A proper playground would be best for students to excel in sport they like, which would be great extracurricular activities for them.
A portion of the said plot will be used to construct this playground. However, firstly, the ground needs to be levelled and then the necessary arrangements to be done.
Below is the brief information about the village:
- The population of Shara village is about 300.
- The residents are mostly retired army personnel and government servants too.
- There are few schools in the village. However, there is no library in the village. As a result, students face inconvenience for accessing expensive reference books. A library of the type we plan will enhance the community life of the village and enable the students to study better. The playground will help them in their extra-curricular activities.
- The village head, and the village president have agreed to allocate the land for both library and playground.
We have estimated the cost of the construction of both the activity centre cum library and multipurpose playground to be approx. Rs.10 lakhs.
We would be really grateful to you if you could please grant us the said amount to help us fulfil the dreams of village children and youth. We look forward to your support and cooperation.
