Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi : A unique melting pot of art, architecture, language, cuisine, poetry, the performing arts, craftsmanship and social mores. From street food to fine dining, Old Delhi has something to offer for everyone.
One particular attribute that may deter a person from going to Old Delhi is the congested alleys, cacophony and a certain level of madness. Getting a perfect place to sit, relax and enjoy the view is almost next to impossible.
A story comes to mind, once I accompanied some of my friends on a food tour to Old Delhi. They were very excited at the thought of exploring diverse food in the vicinity of Jama Masjid. As we reached the narrow alleys of old Delhi and started traversing through them, one of my friends who was from Assam (comparatively laidback life, with lot of chill), shouted at me, “what the hell is wrong with you Imti(my friends calls me Imti instead of Imtiaz), I can’t even walk in these crowded alleys”, said he and was exhausted.
Initially, it was baffling for him to see such humdrum but surprisingly, at the end of the food tour, he was really content and fell in love with Old Delhi that he keeps on coming back again and again. That’s how Old Delhi cast a spell on the travelers. You can’t help but fall in love with this place.
Through this blog we will delve into one such hidden gem in the heart of India’s capital- the Gumbad Cafe.
For now you can leave the crowded eating joints, if you are not used to a lot of people around you while eating and welcome to this new address in Old Delhi The Gumbad Cafe that is completely contrary to the common parlance of being chaotic where it offers you the perfect food with a splendid view of the majestic Jama Masjid and beautiful music playing in the background.

Everything in the cafe smells of Old Delhi, and the menu provides a sneak peek into the history of the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. You’ll be impressed by the diversity of the food along with sheesha and mocktails; however, no alcohol is served. The music stops during the time of Namaz.
I have been to Jama Masjid multiple times but the view from this rooftop cafe on the old Aiwan-E-Shahi hotel offers the picture-postcard view of the Jama Masjid including the minarets and dome to the verandahs inside. And as the evening unfolds, the view of Jama Masjid wearing the lights is a sight to behold and cherish for life time.
Now coming back to the decor of the cafe, the interior of the cafe is tastefully decorated with vintage furniture, colorful cushions, and beautiful artwork. The ambiance is warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day.
The menu at Gumbad Cafe is a fusion of Mughlai and continental cuisine, offering a wide range of dishes to choose from. From traditional mughlai dishes like biryani and karahi to continental favorites like pasta and burgers, there is something for everyone.
There are some standout dishes at Gumbad Cafe that are their signature style and are a must-try for anyone visiting the cafe.
In addition to the delicious food, Gumbad Cafe also offers a variety of hot and cold beverages, including coffee, tea, and fresh juices.
Their signature Gumbad Shahi Tudka served in traditional mughlai dish is a must try, true to its name it’s a “Shahi Delight” made with pieces of bread dipped in delicious saffron flavored sugar syrup and topped with rich rabri.
Just enjoy this signature desert and please don’t count your calories for Heaven’s sake.
The service at Gumbad Cafe is exceptional, with friendly and attentive staff who go out of their way to make sure that every customer has a memorable dining experience.
Overall, Gumbad Cafe is a hidden gem amidst the heart of the cacophony and madness at Old Delhi right next to the beholding views of the majestic Jama Masjid- that offers a unique dining experience. Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot to catch up with friends or a romantic date night spot, Gumbad Cafe is definitely worth a visit.
