SalamatRaho presents to you the inspiring story of initiative Vidya Vistar- by NGO Sarvahitey. Under this initiative NGO Sarvahitey is educating children who cannot afford it. Thanks to Prem Prakash, Co-Founder- Sarvahitey for spearheading this initiative. This journey we call ‘Street to School’.
Street to School is a journey envisioned by NomadLawyer in association with NGO partner Sarvahitey wherein we take necessary steps to bring children in streets or who cannot afford, to taste the sweetness of education. Basic education can help them build a future instead of ruining their lives in the darkness where drugs, substance abuse, begging, stealing becomes their constant company. Their lives start as the darkness sets in. Don’t you think they also have the right to see the light of the day? Let us help them in our small capacity.
Save the children from begging. This kid should have been in a school trying to build a future for himself, on the contrary, he finds himself in the streets begging.
Child begging is a menace in India and many other countries of the sub continent. These children are drugged, maimed and the cartels let them in the streets to beg . In return what do they get? A life full of misery, exposed to drugs at an early age and no education. It’s high time this needs to be stopped.
What can we do as a responsible citizen?
There are many ways to help child beggars in India. You can help them through education, food, or providing shelter to them. Many NGOs are available for helping these children who beg or steal. Street children who look distressed, injured or show any signs of abuse must be reported to the local Child Welfare Committee or police. Please call on this Helpline No- 1098
This brings us to the question- to Give or Not to Give during travel?
Considering the nature of organised begging, you may want to think twice about giving directly to underprivileged child beggars. Your small 10 rupee note given to them isn’t kindness, but encouragement for their daily begging. If you are looking to positively impact the society while you travel, here are the ways according to Nomadlawyer:
- Feed a person, keep them healthy or buy water for the needy.
- Research a worthy non profit organization and volunteer through them.
- Spend some time with a community aid group
- As you travel you can drop at a local school and help the school or the kids in your small way.
- At the end of your travel you may have a few items that you no longer require and you can donate them to the local community.
NGO Sarvahitey has curated some volunteer programs aimed at helping children for education.
This initiative is named Vidya Vistar.
What is Vidya Vistar
Read in the link below:
The initiative of Vidya Vistar was undertaken with a motive to teach the children who cannot afford it. The drive behind this project was the eradication of dilapidated social, financial and most importantly, educational conditions prevalent in the village. Starting with the kids of the village, the project has been gradually trying to target the uneducated adults, and the volunteers are trying to educationally and culturally uplift the parents of the kids.
