In 1744 it was constructed by Franciscans and converted into a fort in 1836. It was famousized during the Texas Revolutionwhen a small group, including James Bowie and Davie Cratch, barricaded against an overwhelmingly stronger Mexican army of about 3,000. The defeat resulted in all 187 defenders being killed. However, the cry of “Remember Alamo!” continued to be heard. The Mexicans were eventually defeated by the state of Texas, which was reunified under the cry “Remember the Alamo!”
