Milton’s history trail includes 28 markers that highlight some of the city’s most significant historic buildings.
Although Milton was only established as a city in 2000, the history of settlement in the area goes back hundreds of years. The sixteenth century was the earliest time that Europeans and native Americans interacted.
These include Hopewell Baptist Church which was built in 1851; the Phillips Homestead, from 1862; and the Providence Baptist Church. The history of this last religious structure can be traced back to a service at the church that was held just before Christmas 1830.

Former Milton Country Club
February 2018 saw the acquisition of the Milton Country Club by the City of Milton.
After a fierce, but very close, online vote by hundreds, the name for the former Milton Country Club was chosen. The poll opened in April and ended at midnight on May 11. It was viewed by hundreds of people. Milton Meadows placed second. This was the end of a long process that saw citizens and Council offer well over 200 names.
February 2018 saw the acquisition of the Milton Country Club by the City of Milton. This is a golf course in central Milton. Officials and citizens began to work together to make the most of this rare property.

Sawnee Mountain Preserve
The Sawnee Mountain Preserve is located in Cumming, about 30 minutes northeast of Milton.
Its visitor centre provides additional information on the surrounding landscapes. The preserve’s nearly 400-hectare size means that there is ample space for you to get away from the crowds and spend a few days in this beautiful wilderness area.
Indian Seats is a natural rock formation located at the top end of the preserve’s trails. The views from this viewpoint are spectacular across the North Georgia Mountains. Visitors will find abandoned gold mines and the typical fauna and flora of the area on their way to Indian Seats.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
It is located at a similar distance to Milton and the Southeastern Railway Museum.
Through the creation of 15 recreation areas along the Chattahoochee’s banks, the river has been designated a site of national importance. These units span 47 miles of river that flows from Lake Sidney Lanier to Atlanta.
Cochran Shoals Park is one of the largest units in the area and marks the spot where Unionist troops crossed Chattahoochee during the American Civil War. For many first-time visitors, Island Ford, located between Sandy Springs and Roswell is a better option. It houses the headquarters of the recreation area and the visitor center.

Southeastern Railway Museum
The museum is approximately half an hour away from Milton in the Atlanta suburb Duluth.
The Southeastern Railway Museum was opened for the first time in 1970. It now houses close to 100 different pieces of railroad stock and other engineering items. The 12-hectare Georgian official transport museum is located around the Duluth passenger depot. This important artifact dates back to 1871.
Visitors can take a ride on an engine car (caboose) that runs along a section of trackway, and also explore the Pullman passenger carriages and steam engines.

North Park, Georgia
For celebrations and gatherings, there are two picnic pavilions available – one is first-come first-served and the other is available for rent.
