WWII Flight Training Museum

The World War II Flight Training Museum and 63rd AAF Flying Training Detachment are a big museum that packs a lot of information into a small space. Between 1941 and 1944, this contract pilot school had 5,000 to 10,000 cadets.

It was also used as a primary flying school. They were trained in flying concepts and gained practical experience. Two-room museum devoted to cadets, training and facilities can be found in the instructors’ barracks. The campus is made up of 10 buildings.

You may also be able receive a guided tour to the two hangers housing restored aircraft. The National Register of Historic Places lists the campus. Admission costs $3.

General Coffee State Park

General Coffee State Park is located just 10 minutes from Douglas. General Coffee State Park is named after the US Congressman General John Coffee. It covers 1,500 acres of parkland with hiking trails and horse-back riding trails as well as campsites and Heritage Farms that offer educational programming and care for farm animals.

The park charges $5 for parking.

Heritage Station Museum

The Heritage Station Museum is located at the former Georgia and Florida Railroad Depot, which served passengers from 1907 until the mid-80’s. The depot was renovated in 1999 and reopened as a museum. It focuses on Douglas’ railroad history and memorabilia. The museum also has exhibits about local military, agricultural and African-American history.

The museum charges $1 per person for admission.

City of Douglas Cemetery

The City of Douglas Cemetery is another great place to take a walk. The 40-acre cemetery is home to beautiful Italian Cyprus trees that are 50 feet tall, and historical monuments. David Kirkland was the first to be buried in this cemetery. He was one of Douglas’ first merchants and died after being thrown off his horse in 1865.
