BRIGHTON ASYLUM was the famous haunted asylum that featured on The Today Show and Buzzfeed. It was closed in 1952 after staff and patient disappearances and intolerable living conditions.

Yogi Berra Museum #2

Yogi Berra rose above the sports world to become an American icon. Few athletes can make such a leap. Yogi is a well-known name even for those not familiar with baseball history. His parents were Italian immigrants.

He was a World War II Navy Gunner who served at D-Day. Yogi is a household name, a Major League coach, manager, and record-holding athlete. He is also a father and husband, and a community member. Yogi spent his final years of a long career at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center, Montclair, N.J. where his passions for education, sports, and community merged as one. The Museum’s programs and exhibitions continue his legacy.

Presby Iris Gardens #3

The Gardens were established in memory of Frank H. Presby who was one of the founding members of the American Iris Society. He is also a prominent Montclair citizen. Frank Presby was an expert in iris hybridization and had a large collection of iris. His expressed desire was to donate a collection of his favorite flower the iris to Montclair’s Mountainside Park. He died in 1924, but he was unable to carry out his plans. In 1927 Miss Katherine Inness, who was the first curator at the Montclair Art Museum, presented the Montclair government with the idea of creating an iris garden to honor Mr. Presby.

The proposed iris gardens would serve as a place of remembrance as well as draw in visitors. They would also encourage educational projects like teaching about the history, care, and hybridization of Iris. The Presby Memorial Iris Gardens were created by the Town Council, Parks Commission and Garden Club of Montclair. They are under the direction of the Citizens Committee, which is headed by Barbara Walther.

Barbara Walther graduated from the University of Chicago in Botany. Fred Walther, her husband, purchased the Upper Mountain property near Mountainside Park in 1918. She was a charter member of Montclair Women’s Club, Garden Club of Montclair, where she gave lectures and wrote many articles. Mr. and Mrs. Walther also played a key role in the preservation of Mountainside Park’s land and the establishment of the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens. She was a fixture among the iris for many years and died in 1997, on the fiftieth year of The Gardens’ founding.

Garret Mountain Reservation #4

Garret Mountain Reservation, also known as Garrett, is a 568-acre (568 ha) park in Passaic County. It is located on First Watchung Mountain (Garret Mountain), in Paterson, New Jersey.

The Passaic County Parks Department manages the park, while the Passaic County Sheriff is responsible for the law enforcement on the reservation. The reservation has hosted hundreds of college and high school cross-country meets over the years, including the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association High School Sectional Championships at October’s end.

Lambert Castle #5

Catholina Lambert’s prized American and European paintings were displayed in the castle. This historic location is one of a few rare examples of American castellated residential architecture. Lambert Castle was included on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places (in 1975) and the National Register of Historic Places (in 1976).

Visitors were allowed to enjoy a scenic view of New York City’s skyline for a prolonged period of time and permanent period room exhibits. It also featured changing exhibits that were based on the Passaic County’s local history. Lambert Castle is currently closed for renovation. Construction is expected to complete in 2023. You can also visit Lambert Tower on Garret Mountain Reserve. Lambert designed this observation tower that is 70 feet tall and offers beautiful views.

The Clifton Arts Center offers a triple treat for art, architecture and history lovers. You will find art, sculpture, and a lot of historic barns. The Hamilton-Van Wagoner House Museum, which is owned by Clifton, is operated by the Passaic County Department of Cultural & Historic Affairs.
