New Echota State Historic Site

New Echota, one of the most important Cherokee Indian sites in the country, was the place where the “Trail of Tears”, the terrible tragedy that decimated the Cherokee Nation, began. The Cherokee national legislature created a capital, New Echota, at the Oostanaula River’s headwaters in 1825.

New Echota’s short history saw the establishment of the first Indian language newspaper office. This court case was brought to the U.S. Supreme Court by one of the earliest attempts at national self-government by an Indian tribe.

It also witnessed the signing of a treaty that relinquished Cherokee claims east of the Mississippi River and the assembly of Indians to be moved west on the Trail of Tears. Visitors can now see 12 restored and original buildings today, including the Court House, Court House and Print Shop. They also have Missionary Samuel Worcester’s house and an 1805 store.

There are also outbuildings like smoke houses, corn cribs, barns, and other outbuildings. The visitor center offers a variety of souvenirs, books and music. You can also view an interpretive film and see interpretive exhibits. The nature trails lead visitors to New Town Creek, a small beaver lake, and other interesting places.
