Passaic, New Jersey
In the late 1860s, Passaic Village was growing steadily in size and population, primarily due to the construction of the Dundee Canal and dam. This created a plentiful supply of fresh water, which became the foundation for Passaic’s rapid growth. Today, the town is densely populated, with the First, Second, and Fourth Wards being the most populated areas. Residents are primarily Latino, although some of them speak English.

Passaic was founded by Dutch traders in 1678. In 1774, it was known as Acquackanonk Township and incorporated as a city in 1870. It borders the city of Clifton on three sides, and is less than ten miles south of New York City. Nearly two-thirds of the population is Hispanic, and the city has a substantial Orthodox Jewish community in the southwest, known as Passaic Park.

In 1837, the county of Passaic was formed from parts of northern Essex and western Bergen counties. In 1854, Acquackanonk Village took on the name Passaic. The township is home to two newspapers, the Passaic Daily News and The Times.
