Passaic, New Jersey

In the late 1860s, Passaic Village was growing steadily in size and population, primarily due to the construction of the Dundee Canal and dam. Today, the town is densely populated, with the First, Second, and Fourth Wards being the most populated areas. Residents are primarily Latino, although some of them speak English.

Passaic was founded by Dutch traders in 1678. In 1774, it was known as Acquackanonk Township and incorporated as a city in 1870. It borders the city of Clifton on three sides, and is less than ten miles south of New York City. Nearly two-thirds of the population is Hispanic, and the city has a substantial Orthodox Jewish community in the southwest, known as Passaic Park.

The township was initially called Acquackanonk Township, and the river was named after this settlement. In 1886, General Livingston and George Washington used it as their names for the bridge. In 1837, the county of Passaic was formed from parts of northern Essex and western Bergen counties. In 1854, Acquackanonk Village took on the name Passaic. The township is home to two newspapers, the Passaic Daily News and The Times.

The Passaic County Community College opened a new campus in the town of Passaic on September 11, 2008. The school serves approximately 15 percent of the community and is planning to expand its nursing program. Among the schools in the area, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic School was founded in 1943 and operates under the supervision of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson and the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Passaic also houses the Collegiate School, a private co-educational day school that serves pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
