Cannon’s Point Preserve

Cannon’s Point Preserve covers 600 acres of forest wilderness, 6 miles of salt marshes and is home to wild native species. It has nature trails and is scattered with ruins. Avenue of the Oaks

The magnificent entrance to Sea Island Golf Course is a must-see for anyone who visits the area. The streets, parks and sidewalks of St. Simons Island are covered in centuries-old oak trees, which are adorned with moss and converge at the magnificent rows that once marked the entrance to Retreat plantation. Retreat Plantation was one the many prosperous ice and cotton plantations on St. Simons Island. People say Anna Page King, who inherited it in 1826, planted so much flowers that sailors could smell them before they saw land.

King, who used to own Retreat Plantation, planted this avenue of oaks at the entrance. It is now more than 160 years old. This tree tunnel is made up of huge live oaks with deep-green leaves and a wide web of twisting and turning limbs. This area is still a beautiful and well-maintained spot with 400 large live oaks draped in Spanish Moss. Follow the avenue and circle back to capture breathtaking photos of this incredible sight.
