Kakunodate, once known as a district for samurai (it once contained 80 samurai families), is characterized by wide streets and open courtyards. Both are shaded by large cherry blossom trees that were imported from Kyoto during the Edo Period (1603-1868). These “weeping” trees are believed to have been planted by the samurai, who wanted to outperform one another.
