Hillsborough Township was created originally by Royal charter on May 31, 1771. It was then revoked on September 12, 1771.The New Jersey Legislature Township Act of 1898 made it one of the original 104 New Jersey townships. Some portions of the township were used to create the boroughs Millstone (May 14, 1894) and Manville (April 1 1929).
