When the idol has completely submerged in water, it is believed Lord Ganesha returned to Kailash to join Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The legend goes that the Ganesha idol is immersed in water and all obstacles are removed. When the idol is submerged in water during visarjan, all obstacles are removed.

Many believe that the sighting of the moon on the Day of Ganesh Chaturthi will result in Mithya Kalank (or Mithya Dosham). This dosha can lead to false accusations of theft and the avoidance of the moon sighting.
